Colorado River, Grizzly Creek to South Canyon

16 July 2005

The river was much lower today at 3,000 cfs, much better than the 7500 flow in early June.  Grizzly Creek to No Name is the section of this run that I always find most challenging, perhaps because it’s pretty busy right at the start – no flat sections as there are lower down - though there are many eddy’s, including those formed by mid-river rocks, which are good place to practice eddy catching.

The float is stunning, even if it is along a major highway.  A hot springs is for the taking on river left, just before reaching Glenwood Springs proper.  There’s another down-river, on river right, which is the outlet for the Glenwood Springs pool.  And this is also where we join the Roaring Fork River – which is much colder and clearer than the Colorado.  Below Two Rivers Park is more flat water…and then South Canyon Wave, which rocks!
