In The Shadow of Longs Peak
Pueblo Reservoir
09 May 2009
We stayed with Brian and Gail in Colorado Springs on Friday evening and headed to Pueblo Reservoir on Saturday.
The drive on Friday evening was a bit of an adventure with high winds (maybe 20 -30 mph and heavy rain. We did not leave Lyons till 7:30 PM which meant we were driving in the dark. All went well though I decided I like the sea kayaks in a cradle as opposed to having it on it’s side against the stackers.
The forecast for Saturday was for more gloom but that is not how it turned out. Saturday showed up pretty sunny, though a bit breezy as we headed south to Pueblo and the south boat ramp at Pueblo Reservoir.
We were on the water and paddling by 11 AM, heading west which is upstream. The water was a choppy and sea like and made for interesting paddling. We were planning to explore the south side coves as we went but instead paddled straight upstream for 1 ½ hours then headed into what appeared to be the last cove on the south side though it was pretty hard to say just exactly how far upstream we really were.
Later, looking at the map, I believe we went as far as Peck Creek, which looks to be toward the end of reservoir, but looking at a topo a better estimate is about half-way.
The landscape here is the kind I like – rocky, open and somewhat reminiscent of Utah.
The trip back was interesting, due to the wind creating a few white caps and at times this proved to be rather stressful. But, but perseverance and maintaining momentum got us back to the put-in and at no time did it even come close to that day on Boulder Reservoir.
I do not have any photos of this outing.
